A history has been made in the Nagaland Assembly elections. It is the first time a woman candidate has won the Assembly elections in the state. Hekani Jakhalu has won from Dimapur III Assembly constituency. She contested the election as a candidate of the BJP-NDPP alliance. He defeated Ajeto Jimomi of LJP (Ram Vilas) by 1536 votes. Another woman candidate from the NDPP-BJP alliance, Salhutunu Kruse, won from West Angami seat. She defeated independent candidate Kenejakho Nakhro by a narrow margin of 12 votes.
Only four women candidates had got tickets in the Assembly elections in the state. Hekani was one of these. Chief Minister Nephew Rio was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to campaign for Hekani during the polls.
