The government has appointed five new judges to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names in December last year. He is expected to be sworn in on Monday after the Rashtrapati Bhavan issued his appointment letter. The five names approved include Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Pankaj Mithal, Patna High Court Chief Justice Sanjay Karol, Manipur High Court Chief Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Patna High Court Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Allahabad High Court Justice Manoj Mishra's name is included.
The Supreme Court now has 32 judges. While there are 34 judges sanctioned. A day earlier, the Supreme Court had expressed displeasure over the non-approval of the appointment of judges. The court had said not to force us to take tough decisions. Meanwhile, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju made a big statement in Prayagraj, UP. According to Supreme Court sources, all the newly appointed judges will be sworn in as Supreme Court judges on Monday. Their swearing-in will largely replace the total number of sanctioned Supreme Court judges of This means that there are 27 judges so far which will increase to 32 with the arrival of the new judges. The Union Government is expected to give its approval to the recommendation of two more judges next week. These two names have also been recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium recently. Once those appointments are approved, the Supreme Court will be fully functional again. However, this year, on average, one judge retires every month and a half. In other words, a total of nine judges will turn 65 this year and are scheduled to retire this year.
