Schools sanitary pads: Girls get free sanitary pads in government schools, Supreme Court seeks answers from Center and States

Free Sanitary Pads: There has been a demand for a long time to provide free sanitary pads to girls studying in government schools.  Now the Supreme Court has sought answers from the Central Government as well as all the States and Union Territories on this issue.
On Monday, a public interest litigation related to providing free sanitary pads to girls studying in classes VI to XII in government schools across the country was heard in the Supreme Court.  Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha, while hearing the petition of social activist Jaya Thakur, have issued notices to the Central Government as well as all the States and Union Territories seeking answers.
At present, there are some states, where sanitary pads are provided free of cost to girls in government schools.  In Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Odisha, Assam, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh, school girls are being given free sanitary pads by running schemes under different names.
