Kenneth Smith Death Penalty: United Nations Human Rights, European Union and anti-death penalty activists have condemned the hanging of a prisoner using nitrogen gas. Kenneth Eugene Smith was sentenced to death in Alabama on Thursday. This was the first case of its kind of giving death penalty through nitrogen gas, which has given rise to a big debate in America.
Smith was forced to breathe nitrogen gas through a face mask before being declared dead in an Alabama prison. By doing this he stopped getting oxygen. The description of this entire incident given by the people who witnessed this hanging is frightening.
According to the Daily Mail, spiritual guide Jeff Hood said it was the "worst" moment he had ever seen. He also said prison officers gasped in fear as Smith writhed in pain for 22 minutes before dying. Hood said, 'When he turned on the nitrogen, he started convulsing, he shook the whole gurney.'
