DY Chandrachud: Justice DY Chandrachud has taken charge as the 50th Chief Justice of India earlier this week.  On Saturday (12 November) he spoke about the challenges faced by judges of constitutional courts.  Justice DY Chandrachud said at the 20th edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, "The first challenge we face is one of expectations."
He further said that social media is also one of the biggest challenges of the present times.  The Chief Justice stressed, "Not everything said by a judge during the hearing of a case is the final opinion. When a case is heard, there is a free dialogue. Real-time reporting of the judge's decisions on Twitter or Telegram."  And put them on Instagram and then you start judging. If the judge keeps quiet, it will have a dangerous effect on decision making."
The Chief Justice also highlighted that e-court (electronic) services now reach not only metros but also villages.  He said, “We need to reinvent ourselves, reinvent ourselves and rethink how we adapt to the challenges of our age. We live in a country where internet penetration is strong.  No. Court buildings create awe in the minds of litigants...It was the design of the colonial mindset. Technology allowed us to change the model where citizens accessed the courts and allowed the courts to access the litigants.  "
