U U Lalit appointed as Chief Justice of Supreme Court

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India on Wednesday.  President Draupadi Murmu signed his appointment warrant.  He will take office on August. Justice UU Lalit will have a brief tenure as the head of the judiciary of India.

  He will serve as CJI for about three months and will resign on November 8,  In fact, Supreme Court justices retire at 65 years of age.  At the same time, the retirement age of High Court judges is 62 years.  Justice Lalit will be the second CJI to be promoted directly from the bar to the Supreme Court bench.  In March 1964, Justice SM Sikri was the first lawyer to be promoted directly to the Supreme Court bench.  In January 1971, Sikri became the 13th CGI.

  "The President has appointed Supreme Court Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the Chief Justice of India in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India," a law ministry notification said.  His appointment will take effect from August 27,  Justice Lalit has been a part of several landmark judgments including one that held the practice of instant triple talaq illegal and unconstitutional among Muslims.Lalit has been a renowned lawyer.  On August 13, 2014, he was appointed as a Supreme Court judge.  He practiced as an advocate in Delhi from January  In April 2004, the Supreme Court appointed him as a senior advocate.  He was appointed as the CBI's special public prosecutor for the 2G spectrum allocation case.
