Forbes’ inaugural 50 Over 50 Global list celebrates exceptional women who have made a significant impact in their respective fields, demonstrating that age is no barrier to success. The list highlights individuals who continue to inspire, innovate, and drive change well beyond the age of 50. Among the women recognized globally, three inspiring Indian women have made it to this prestigious list.
Urmila Asher, an 80-year-old entrepreneur from Mumbai, secured an impressive third spot on Forbes’ 50 Over 50 list. Her entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 75 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she decided to start Gujju Ben Na Nasta, a cloud kitchen specializing in authentic Gujarati snacks.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder of Biocon, one of India's largest biopharmaceutical companies, earned the 32nd spot on the 50 Over 50 list. She has built a remarkable legacy since founding the company in 1978, transforming it into a global leader in the biopharmaceutical industry. With an estimated net worth exceeding Rs 28,000 crore, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is one of India’s wealthiest self-made individuals.
Sheela Patel, a social activist and founder of SPARC (Society for Promotion of Area Resource Centres), ranked 37th on Forbes’ list. Sheela’s focus has been on improving housing for low-income communities, especially in urban areas like Mumbai. Through SPARC, she has helped develop 11 housing projects aimed at improving the living conditions of marginalized populations.
