The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which was added through a 1985 amendment to carry forward the Assam Accord. This section was incorporated into the Constitution through an amendment in 1985 to carry forward the Assam Accord. In its judgment, a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Suryakant, MM Sundaresh and Manoj Mishra delivered the majority verdict while Justice JB Pardiwala dissented.
