England's star all-rounder Ben Stokes has retired from ODI cricket. He will not be seen playing in this format after the ODI against South Africa on Tuesday. Stokes has played 104 ODI matches so far. The 31-year-old Stokes was the man of the match in the 2019 ODI World Cup final.
This match was played at Lord's and it was the first time England won the ODI World Cup. He scored 84 runs in the final. In 2011, he made his ODI debut against Ireland. Stokes has scored 2919 runs and has 74 wickets in his name.
Ben Stokes defeated Pakistan 3-0 in the ODI series under his captaincy. Stokes said, 'I will play my last match for England in ODI cricket on Tuesday in Durham. I have decided to retire from this format. This is a difficult decision for me. I felt very proud to play with my teammates. This decision was very difficult for me.
It is very difficult for me to play in all three formats of cricket. I feel my body is responding too now. I am taking the place of a player myself. I want someone else to play in this format in my place and do better than me.
I will give everything for test cricket
Stokes further said, 'Now will be the time for me to play Test cricket and I will give everything for this. At the same time, I will be fully prepared for the T20 format as well.
Recently, Ben Stokes was not able to perform much in the ODI series against India. Stokes was flop with both bat and ball. He scored just 48 runs with the bat in 3 matches at a simple average of 16. At the same time, he did not get a single wicket in the entire series.
