January 15, 2026 marks the 78th Indian Army Day.
The day commemorates Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa becoming the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949.
He took over command from Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
The date January 15 was chosen specifically because it marks the day Cariappa assumed command. In 2026, celebrations be held at Fort Maidan, Delhi Cantonment.
