AIIMS Delhi performs India’s first successful foetal blood transfusion

In June, 2024 AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Delhi has successfully performed India's first foetal blood transfusion to save a child with a rare blood disorder.The patient, a woman from Haryana, had suffered 7 failed pregnancies due to incompatibility between her red blood cells and those of her foetus.The foetus was suffering from anaemia and required urgent blood transfusions.The required blood type, O D phenotype red cell units, was not available in India and was imported from Japan.The foetus received 6 intrauterine blood transfusions, which successfully reversed the condition of hydrops (heart failure).The pregnancy continued for 8 months, and the baby was delivered by a caesarean section.This is the first case of a successful pregnancy outcome in a case of alloimmunization due to Rh 17 Ag in India and the 8th case in the world.
