PM Modi releases latest tiger figures, says: Protecting nature, part of our culture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has released new figures for tigers.  According to the new data, the number of tigers in the country will increase to 3,167 by  Earlier, the figure was 2,9  Thus, the number of tigers in the country has increased by 200.  Prime Minister Modi launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) to mark the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger.  The Prime Minister also issued a commemorative coin on the occasion.
   During the programme, Union Forest and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said that tiger conservation in the country started in 1973 with nine tiger reserves.  Today, their number has reached 53 tiger reserves.  Of these, 23 tiger reserves have international recognition.  Project Tiger was launched in 1973 by the then Indira Gandhi government.  April 1 marks the 50th anniversary of the project.  Under IBCA, the focus will be on conservation of tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, cheetahs and pumas.
   During the programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Project Tiger has played a pioneering role in the conservation and protection of tigers in the country.  Protecting nature is part of Indian culture.  The success of Project Tiger is a matter of pride not only for India but for the entire world.  India has completed 75 years of independence and at the same time 75 per cent of the world's tigers reside in India,” he said.
