A former MLA has been arrested in Assam for allegedly involvement in illegal gambling. The accused former MLA is Naren Sonowal. Sonowal is a former MLA from Naharkatia assembly constituency in Assam.
Dibrugarh police on Thursday night arrested six other accused along with Sonowal for allegedly involvement in illegal gambling activities. Former Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) MLA Sonowal was arrested by a police team from Boiragimoth area of Dibrugarh city.
Talking to mediapersons in Dibrugarh, police officer Raju Bahadur Chhetri said, “On the basis of special inputs, we raided a house in Boiragimoth area late on Thursday night and managed to arrest a total of seven persons. They were found to be involved in illegal gambling activities,” he said.
"We have arrested the accused under Section 16 of the Assam Game and Betting Act, 1970," Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra said. All the accused were produced in a local court on Friday.
