IAF Group Captain Shaliza Dhami: The Indian Air Force has broken the restrictions on women by handing Group Captain Shaliza Dhami the command of the Frontline Combat Unit in the Western Sector.  This is the first time in the history of the Indian Air Force that a woman has been given this responsibility.  The Army has started handing over command to women officers out of the medical stream.  Of these, 50 women will lead units in the Northern and Eastern Operational Areas.
Group Captain Dhami was appointed as a helicopter pilot in 2003, according to English news website NDTV.  Shaliza has over 2,800 hours of flying experience.  She is a qualified flying instructor.  She has also served as flight commander of the helicopter unit in the Western Area.  In the Indian Army, the rank of a Group Captain is equivalent to that of an Army Colonel.
