Six Army officers and soldiers from Assam have been selected for the Army Medal announced annually by the Union Defense Ministry on the occasion of Republic Day.
Eastern Commander, GOC Lt. Gen. Rana Pratap Kalita has been awarded the Government of India's Highest Distinguished Service Medal.
Kalita, a former student of Goalpara Sainik School and National Defense Academy, has previously received the Army Medal and twice the Distinguished Service Medal for outstanding performance.
He has also been awarded the prestigious Best War Service Medal, 'Very Distinguished Service Medal', 'Seva Medal', 'Distinguished Service Medal' and Three Star General for his outstanding service to the country.
Meanwhile, five other Army officers and soldiers from Assam have been awarded the Army Awards announced on the occasion of the country's 74th Republic Day.This year, Colonel Hiren Bora of the Madras Regiment has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.
Major Vijay Baishya of 42nd RS Rifles, Major Bhaskar Bora of Garwal Rifles and two soldiers of 42nd RS Rifles Pavithra Boro and Sanjit Rabha received the Army Medal for Bravery.
