A total of 189 prisoners, including three from Thane Central Jail, will be released from Maharashtra jails on Republic Day under the central government's special exemption program to mark the 75th anniversary of independence. An official said Sunday. He said three prisoners from Thane were serving jail terms for attempted murder and other offences. “Under the special exemption programme, some prisoners will be released on January 26 and August 15 for good conduct during their sentence,” the official said. A total of 189 prisoners from Maharashtra will be released.’’
He said prisoners are selected based on age, time spent in jail, disability, health and other aspects. There are 4,569 prisoners in Thane Central Jail, including 132 women, officials said. Of these, 52 prisoners are over 70 years of age and 386 are under 20 years of age. However, the prison has a capacity of only 1,105 inmates. He said the total number of prisoners to be released included 30 Bangladeshis and the same number of Nigerians. According to official data, the total number of jail inmates in Maharashtra is 43,090.
