The Government of India has granted Geographical Indication Tag ( ‘GI Tag’ Geographical Indication Tag) to the ‘Gamocha’, the symbol of Assamese dignity, tradition and pride.
The Registrar of Geographical Indices, Government of India, granted the recognition on 13 December.
The Assam Agricultural University has been working for a long time for the permanent and global recognition of the Gamocha which has come to life in the hands of the artisans of Assam.
The Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has already received this recognition for its lemon, dry rice and chakwa rice.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma tweeted his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the recognition.
