Mopa International Airport In Goa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Mopa International Airport in Goa today. This is the second airport in the state after Dabolim Airport. According to the information given by the PMO, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of this airport project on 13 November 2016 and now he is going to inaugurate it. The airport, located at Mopa in North Goa, has cost Rs 2,870 crore. Let us tell you the complete story of the construction of the new airport which will redefine Goa.
This airport was envisaged in the 1990s. There have been moments in its tumultuous history when it seemed like the airport, being developed by GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL), would come to a standstill. Yet nearly two decades later, the new airport, privately managed and built, is all set to change the tide of this tiny state. However, some people believe that there is no need for a second airport in the small state.
For Goa's Director of Civil Aviation Suresh Shanbhogu and others like him who have been associated with the project since 2014-15, the final opening of the Mopa airport is a dream come true. Shanbhogu, who served as a nominee director on the board of GMR, was given charge in the newly established Directorate of Civil Aviation by then chief minister Manohar Parrikar in 2014.
