Crimes against women and children: 161 cases of human trafficking registered in one year, 123 traffickers arrested

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday held a discussion on women and child protection at the Assam Police Headquarters, Ulubari, Guwahati.  The meeting was attended by representatives of various government departments, NGOs, educational institutions, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and other institutions involved in women and child protection.  The police are committed to preventing crimes against women and children.Emphasizing on taking strong multi-faceted measures to prevent such crimes, Director General Mahanta said that government departments like police, social welfare, education, labour, health, State Women's Commission, Assam State Child Rights Protection Commission, educational institutions and NGOs are involved  An action plan should be developed through good coordination and cooperation among the agencies.
The Additional Director General of Criminal Investigation Department also informed about the launch of women 'help desks' in 320 police stations and said that more than 1330 police officers have been given special training by the Criminal Investigation Department in the last two years.  He said a 'Family Counseling Centre' has been set up at the headquarters of the Crime Investigation Department and a 'Child Friendly Resource Centre' has been set up in collaboration with UNICEF and anti-human trafficking groups have been set up in all districts.  He said 161 cases of human trafficking have been registered in the past year  Of these, 123 traffickers were arrested and a total of 279 victims, including 110 children, were rescued.
