The Golden-headed Cisticola (Cisticola exilis), usually found in grasslands, was recently discovered in the Mathikettan Shola National Park in Idukki, located in the southern part of the Palakkad Gap in the Western Ghats. According to ornithologists, this discovery is the first sighting of the bird in the southern Western Ghats after a long gap.
The bird was spotted by Latheesh R. Nath, principal of VHSS Wadakkanchery, Koratty, and retired village officer Ravindran KC of Athirappilly, who are members of Thrissur Kole Birders, an organisation of bird watchers.
