Kolkata Underwater Metro Rail: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro on Wednesday (March 6, 2024). The Howrah Plain-Esplanade Metro section is the first transport tunnel to be built under any river in India.
It passes under the Hooghly River, whose eastern and western banks are bordered by the cities of Kolkata and Howrah respectively. Howrah Metro Station is also the deepest metro station in India, a government release said. Meanwhile, the Kolkata Metro said it faced considerable difficulties in building it.
