From selling tea to becoming an IAS

Himanshu Gupta spent his childhood in extreme poverty, he travelled 70 km daily to go to school. Not only this, he also worked at a tea stall to help his father. With his hard work, Himanshu Gupta of Uttarakhand passed the UPSC Civil Service Exam and became an IAS officer. This story published on Official Human of Bombay encourages every candidate. The parents of Himanshu Gupta, who cleared the UPSC and became an IAS, are school dropouts. His father used to work as a daily wage labourer. He would also set up a tea stall to earn money but he never compromised on his son's education.
Himanshu Gupta cleared the UPSC exam for the first time in the year 2018, when he was selected for the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). He again took the exam in 2019 and was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) in the second attempt. And then in 2020, in his third attempt, he got selected in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Himanshu Gupta tells his story- 'I used to work with my father before and after going to school. The school was 35 km away and the journey was 70 km. I used to travel in a van with my classmates. Whenever my classmates passed by our tea stall, I used to hide. But once someone saw me and started making fun of me. I started being called 'Chaiwala'. But instead of paying attention to that, I focused on studies and helped my father whenever I got time. Together, we used to earn 400 rupees daily to run our house.But I had big dreams. I dreamt of living in a city and building a better life for myself and my family. Papa would often say, 'If you want to make your dreams come true, study!' So that's what I did. I knew that if I studied hard, I would get admission in a prestigious university. But I didn't know English, so I would buy English movie DVDs and watch them to learn.'
