Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud will take oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on 9 November. He on Monday said that as the successor of Justice UU Lalit, he has huge responsibilities on his shoulders and hoped that he would continue the good work started by him.
Current Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit is going to retire at the age of 65 on a court holiday today (November 8). He had a short tenure of 74 days as the head of the judiciary. Justice Chandrachud, while addressing a farewell function for Justice Lalit organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), said the 49th CJI had a remarkable leadership and was committed to increasing access to justice during his tenure.
Justice Chandrachud said, "I feel that as your successor, I personally have huge responsibilities on my shoulders." Justice Chandrachud, who was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on May 13, 2016, will have a two-year term as CJI and will retire on November 10, 2024.
