Retirement of CJI UU Lalit: Today will be the last day of the Chief Justice of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit in the Supreme Court. He is retiring on 8 November. However, tomorrow there will be a holiday in the court due to Guru Nanak Jayanti. In such a situation, today is the last working day of Justice Lalit in the Supreme Court.
On his last working day, the proceedings of the formal bench headed by the CJI will be telecast live from the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of India shares the bench with his successor in the Ceremonial Bench. During this, other members of the bar and other officials bid him farewell.
Justice Lalit is the second CJI to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court from the Bar. The first was Justice SM Sikri, who became the 13th CJI in January 1971. Justice Lalit's father, Justice UR Lalit, was also a senior advocate and an additional judge of the Bombay High Court. Justice Lalit was appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of the country on 26 August 2022 after the completion of the term of CJI NV Raman.
