Assam-Meghalaya floods kill 31 in two days: 19 lakh people affected in Assam, Agartala receives third highest rainfall in 60 years

The situation is bad in Assam and Meghalaya due to heavy rains.  In the last two days, 12 people have died in Assam and 19 in Meghalaya due to floods and landslides.  Over 19 lakh people have been affected in 28 districts of Assam, while around 1 lakh people are in relief camps.  A boat carrying flood-affected people sank in Hojai district of the state.  Three children are missing after the accident.  21 people have been rescued.The Meteorological Department said that Mausinram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya have received the highest rainfall since 1940.  Mausinram has received 1003.6 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.  Earlier, 1563.3 mm of rain was recorded on 16 June 1995, 973.8 mm on 5 June 1956.
 Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed in the floods.
