World Aquatics last Wednesday opened the first ever competitive swimming pool in Bhutan at a record height of 2,400 metres, as part of the Pools for All program to promote aquatic sports in the region.

The global body of swimming has launched a program in 2019 aimed at ensuring accessible aquatic facilities for more countries and territories.  The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries and officials from World Aquatics, Bhutan Olympic Committee, local and regional authorities, presidents of Bhutanese National Federation of four Olympic Games and Bhutan Tourism Department.

Chairman of the Bhutan Olympic Committee HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk hailed the opening of the country’s first swimming pool, saying the site “symbolizes the beginning of a new era for aquatic science in Bhutan.”
