Iceland has become home to the world's largest facility to extract carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, a significant milestone in the fight against climate change.

Operated by Swiss firm Climworks, the new operational plant called "Mammoth" has quadrupled the global capacity of direct air capture (DAC).

While existing DAC projects around the world collectively manage to collect about 10,000 metric tons of carbon annually, Mammoth is poised to remove up to 36,000 metric tons per year once fully operational in 2024.
