Scientist and former Rajya Sabha MP Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, the father of India's green revolution, passed away today, September 28. He was 98 years old. He spent his last moments at his home in Chennai.
Professor Swaminathan was a renowned agronomist and plant genticist. He played an important role in developing higher yielding varieties of paddy. Swaminathan thanked two Union Agriculture Ministers - C.S. Subramanian and Jagjivan Ram - and is credited with saving India from famine in the 1960s by Swaminathan and his American scientific colleague Norman Borlaug.
