China's Foreign Ministry claimed this week that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping had held talks at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia last year. China claimed that the two leaders had agreed to stabilize bilateral relations. Now India has clarified this.
"Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping had a courtesy call after a dinner hosted by the Indonesian President," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in reply to a question on Thursday. The two leaders also spoke about the need to stabilize our bilateral relations. As you all know, we have been strongly saying that the key to resolving this entire issue is to resolve the situation on the Line of Actual Control (LoC) on the Indo-China border and restore peace in the border areas,” he said.
The video of the G-20 Bali that surfaced showed PM Modi and Xi Jinping shaking hands at the end of the post-dinner. The video showed that as President Xi Jinping walks towards PM Modi, the two leaders greet each other and shake hands. The two leaders appeared to talk easily to each other. However, it was not clear whether the two had any talks on Indo-China relations.
The clarification from both countries comes eight months after PM Modi and Xi Jinping met. China issued a statement this week about the talks between the two leaders.
"President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached an important agreement in Bali late last year on the issue of stabilizing relations," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
