The news of her passing was shared by her family saying "her family and friends are devastated". Although the cause of her death has not been made public, reported media.
She was best known for her 1990 number-one hit, Nothing Compares 2 U, which catapulted her to worldwide popularity.
In 1987, she published her first critically acclaimed album, The Lion And The Cobra, which charted in the UK and US.
After the news of her death broke, social media was swamped with tributes to the singer.
