National Desk:
An Indian can have two perspectives of looking at the Commonwealth Games. You can consider this as either a symbol of British slavery or an opportunity to tell the British that within 75 years of independence we have become better than them in many ways. Indian weightlifters certainly believe in the second philosophy.
Evidence of this was also found on Saturday, 30 July. On this day in the 22nd Commonwealth Games, four weight categories of weightlifting were competed. India won medals in all four. With this, India has become more successful country than England in the sport of weightlifting in the history of Commonwealth Games.
Mirabai Chanu won the gold on Saturday. Sanket and Bindiya Rani won silver. At the same time, Gururaja Pujari captured the bronze. Now India has overtaken England in terms of winning gold and silver in weightlifting. India's name has become 44 gold and 50 silver.
The British have 43 gold and 48 silver in this game. India (34) was already ahead of England (25) in terms of bronze. Only Australia is ahead of India. Australia has so far won 59 gold, 52 silver and 48 bronze in Commonwealth Games weightlifting. In the coming few years, we are going to overtake Australia as well.
