In Taiwan, Lai Ching Te of the Democratic Progressive Party was sworn in as the popular newly elected president on Monday. After taking office, Lai will be the third outgoing vice president to become president of Taiwan.
Taiwan held its first direct presidential election in 1996. Lai delivered the inaugural address outside the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, Taiwan. The morning ceremony began his four-year term as president of Taiwan.
He has said he would resist Beijing's threats and boost Taiwan's security. He said “We will see an emphasis on national security, cross-strait issues and continuity in foreign policy.”
