Indian-American Akshay Bhatia persevered in a tense end to hold off a spectacular final run from Denny McCarthy to win the Valero Texas Open in Sunday's . It also earned him a spot in next week's Masters.
Bhatia will join another Indian-American, Sahith Thigala, at the Masters.
Bhatia was nearly out of the tournament, maintaining a six-shot lead entering the 10th hole, before McCarthy birdied eight of the final nine holes — including seven in a row — to reach a 20-under par for and put pressure on Bhatia. Bhatia then made an 11-foot birdie putt to force a playoff. He birdied the first playoff hole, while McCarthy made a double bogey to secure his second career PGA Tour victory.
