March 2, 1949 is recorded in history as the death anniversary of Sarojini Naidu.  Political activist, supporter of women's rights, freedom fighter and the first Indian woman president of the Indian National Congress, Sarojini Naidu was called the "Nightingale of India" for her powerful speech and powerful writings.
 Born on 13 February 1879 in Hyderabad, Sarojini's father Aghorenath Chattopadhyay was the principal of Nizam College, Hyderabad.  Apart from the University of Madras, Sarojini studied at King's College, London and then Girton College, Cambridge.  She participated in the country's freedom struggle and after independence, she was made the Governor of United Provinces (presently Uttar Pradesh).  She also has the distinction of being the first woman governor of the country.  Her writings also influenced the intellectuals of the country.
