Queen Margarethe of Denmark has finally abdicated the throne after 52 years. After her abdication, her son Frederick has become the new king. Queen Margarethe II formally signs her abdication, after which the Danish Prime Minister proclaims Frederick as king on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.
Thousands of people gathered in the streets of the Danish capital to congratulate Frederick and bid farewell to Margrethe. Let us tell you that the Queen is the first Danish queen/king to voluntarily abdicate in nearly 900 years.
In his first speech after becoming king, Frederick said 'My hope is to become a unified king of tomorrow. This is something I have done my entire life. This is a job that I do with pride, honor and joy. However, Frederick became king that very day, when his mother signed the abdication declaration in the Council of State. She went out of the room with tears in her eyes saying that God bless the king.'
