Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case: The Nirbhaya gang rape case, which took place in a private bus running on the streets of Delhi, shook not only Delhi or the country but the entire world. 11 years ago, on the night of December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped by six people in a moving bus in Munirka area of the capital Delhi. Thinking that the victim was dead, they threw her on the roadside and ran away. The victim died during treatment on December 29, 2012 in a hospital in Singapore. After this horrific incident, Delhi came to be known as the rape capital. People took to the streets with many demands like justice to the victim, arrest of the culprits, speedy trial and death sentence, women's safety, strict laws etc. This case shocked the entire country. Come, let us know what has changed in Delhi and the country after 11 years of Nirbhaya gangrape-murder case? Along with this, where did the minor convict of Nirbhaya case go after being released?
After the Nirbhaya gangrape-murder case, which was declared the 'rarest of the rare case' by the Supreme Court, many big steps were taken for women's safety across the country. The recommendations of Justice JS Verma Committee were implemented in the country. One stop centers were set up for rape victims in almost all the districts of the country. Helpline started for women safety. In such a case, Nirbhaya Fund was created to help the victim. On the other hand, in the Nirbhaya case, after the case continued for almost 8 years, four convicts were hanged in March 2020. A minor convict was released after three years. Even before the punishment, one of the convicts in this case had committed suicide in the jail itself. Despite the actions taken in the case described as the most brutal gangrape case of the century, crimes against women, especially rape cases, have increased instead of decreasing in Delhi and the country. The figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) prove this.
