Amid ongoing tensions between India and Canada, External Affairs Ministry data shows that between January 2018 and June 2023, 1.6 lakh Indians took Canadian citizenship.  This number is 20% of the total number of people renouncing Indian citizenship.  Data shows that Canada has become the second most popular country for Indians.
 The United States tops the list with the highest number of Indians who renounced their citizenship.  Canada is followed by Australia in third place and Britain in fourth place for which Indians are giving up their citizenship.  Between January 2018 and June 2023, around 8.4 lakh people renounced their Indian citizenship and adopted citizenship of 114 different countries.
 58% of Indians who renounced Indian citizenship chose to go to Canada and the United States.  This trend of renouncing India's citizenship has been increasing every year, however, in 2020 the rate of renouncing citizenship had declined due to the epidemic.  The number of people renouncing Indian citizenship in 2018 was 1.3 lakh, which rose to 2.2 lakh in 2022.  By June 2023, about 87,000 Indians have applied for foreign citizenship...
 Immigration expert Vikram Shroff says many Indians prefer to go to countries where the English language is dominant.

 “There are many reasons for migration, such as higher standard of living, children's education, employment opportunities and good health facilities,” he says.  Canada and Australia are attracting foreign talent to their countries by easing the rules for acquiring home and citizenship.'
 External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had recently said in Parliament that his government was taking several steps to make maximum use of migrants.  “Successful, prosperous and effective expatriates are extremely beneficial for India.  Our thinking is to take full advantage of the expatriate network and use its reputation for the benefit of the country.'
