The festival is celebrated on the fourth day of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.  It is believed that Ganesha appeared on this day.  It is also believed that on this day, Lord Ganesha comes to earth and fulfills the wishes of devotees.  The period of worship of Lord Ganesha lasts for 10 days, this is called Ganesh Mahotsav.  Ganesh resides on earth, Ganesh Mahotsav continues till Anant Chaturdashi.  This year, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi starts from September 19 and will continue till September 28.  The festival is celebrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.

 According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad.  This year, Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated on September 19, and Ganesh Visarjan will be held ten days later, on Thursday, September  Chaturthi Tithi started on September 18 at 12.39 pm and will end on September 19 at 1.43 pm today.
