A three-member team from the Editors Guild of India went to Manipur to assess media coverage of the ethnic conflict. The Manipur police had registered a case against three members of the group and the president of the Editors Guild for seeking factual information about the situation in Manipur. The complainant alleged that, the report submitted by the team contained incorrect information and among the allegations contained in the first fact report was promotion of enmity between different groups.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra said there was no sign of crime in the chargesheet. The three-member bench also questioned how merely submitting a report can be an offence.
The Supreme Court Chief Justice Chandrachud said the Solicitor General of the Army had invited the Editors Guild team to Manipur. They were invited to submit an impartial report on the real situation in Manipur as various biased reports were being published. That report may be correct or incorrect.
The bench asked the complainant why the case should not be dismissed and gave him two weeks to reply.
