The NIT in Shillong on Friday night was in turmoil over the suicide of a student. Hundreds of students surrounded the residence of the dean of the institute. The students also locked Dean Vinayakrishna and his family in their residence and vandalized their vehicles.
Police launched lathi charges to disperse the unexpected situation caused by the students' protest. The students threw stones at the police who stopped them. Several policemen and students were injured in the clashes.
The students vandalized several vehicles. They announced that the institute would be closed indefinitely if the situation deteriorated further.
