So far, more than 5,300 people have died in the floods, while more than 10,000 are still missing. The death toll could rise. The floods have hit the eastern region of Libya, where the city of Darna has been completely destroyed, Al Jazeera reported.
The death toll in Darna has risen to more than 5,300, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Mohammed Abu-Lamosha. Two dams broke in already flooded areas, causing a deluge of water, sweeping thousands of people, CNN reported. most of whom are still missing. A quarter of the city of Darna is said to have been destroyed. Tamer Ramadan, Libya envoy for the International Federation of Red Cross and Ted Crescent Societies, said 10,000 people have been missing since the floods.
More than 1,000 bodies were collected, with at least 700 buried so far, the eastern Libyan health minister said. Darna's ambulance authority has confirmed 2,300 deaths. Floods wreaked havoc in Derna and other parts of eastern Libya on Sunday night. As the storm knocked ashore, Darna residents said they heard loud explosions and felt the levees outside the city collapse, according to the report .
