Rahul Gandhi Defamation Case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi got a big relief on Friday (August 4). The Supreme Court stayed his sentence in the Modi surname defamation case. In 2019, a Gujarat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail for making comments on Modi's surname, after which he lost his Lok Sabha membership.
The stay of sentence from the Supreme Court will continue till the decision of the Surat Sessions Court. Rahul Gandhi has filed an appeal against the conviction in the Surat Sessions Court, which is currently pending. Rahul Gandhi has been relieved by the Supreme Court but his legal difficulties are not yet completely over.
His Lok Sabha membership expired in March 2023 after he was sentenced to two years in jail by a lower court. The Lok Sabha Secretariat had issued a notification in this regard. Now, after the Supreme Court stayed his sentence, Rahul Gandhi is ready to return to the Lok Sabha once again. After the verdict on Friday (August 4), Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Choudhary met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanded immediate restoration of Rahul Gandhi's membership. However, the Speaker said he was awaiting a copy of the Supreme Court order.
Officials of the Lok Sabha Secretariat will study the order after receiving a copy of the court order. An order will be issued to restore Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership. However, there is no fixed time frame for the completion of the process but it is hoped that Rahul Gandhi will be able to participate in the Lok Sabha proceedings next week.
