The Center on Thursday made an important announcement. This time, the Center has decided to set up IITs on foreign soil, not on Indian soil. IIT Madras has decided to open a campus in Africa. On Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the opening of the compound in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region in Tanzania.
The new IIT campus will be built on the coast of East Africa. External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar recently visited Tanzania.
The Foreign Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Minwi on Wednesday. "This is the first time an IIT campus has been set up outside the country," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
