The collegium on Wednesday (July 5) sent two names for appointment as Supreme Court judges to the central government. The judges are Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan and Kerala High Court Chief Justice SV Bhati. There are currently 31 judges in the Supreme Court. Currently, 3 judge posts are vacant.
The collegium recommending the names of Ujjwal Bhuyan and S V Bhati from the Center comprises Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Suryakant. In fact, three judges of the Supreme Court retired last month.
Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan was born on August 2, 1964 in Guwahati. Bhuyan's father Suchendra Nath Bhuiyan is an advocate. Ujjwal Bhuyan had his early education at Don Bosco School in Guwahati.
Bhuyan graduated from Kirodimal College, Delhi University and then did his LLB from Government Law College, Guwahati. He then went on to complete his LLM degree from Guwahati University.
Bhuyan was formerly an Additional Judge of the Guwahati High Court and a judge of the Bombay High Court. After serving as a judge in the Bombay High Court, he became a judge of the Telangana High Court on October 22, 2021 . He was made Chief Justice of Telangana High Court in July
2022.
