IWT Department, Assam has announced the suspension of night ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati effective from Saturday.
The decision comes in response to the sudden surge in the water levels of the River Brahmaputra, causing concerns for the safety of passengers.
The night ferry services, which normally operate from 6:30 PM until 9:30 PM, will remain halted until further notice. This precautionary measure has been implemented to ensure the well-being of commuters amidst the challenging flood situation currently gripping several districts in Assam.
The Executive Engineer of the Inland Water Transport Department, Assam, Jayanta Gogoi, said that apart from the rising water levels, another major reason for the suspension of the night ferry services is the problem of floating objects such as tree stems and logs that flow to the river from the nearby land mass due to the ongoing flash floods.
