The country's first female IPS officer Kiran Bedi is still a source of inspiration for youngsters preparing for the UPSC. Born on June 9, 1949, Dr. Kiran Bedi qualified UPSC in 1972 and became an IPS but did you know that this police officer with her tough nature and discouraging criminals has been a tennis champion. Kiran Bedi, the country's first female IPS officer, was initially interested in sports. Her father Prakash Peshwaria and mother Prem Peshwaria noticed her interest and admitted her to the stadium to play tennis. Kiran Bedi also won the National Junior Tennis Championship in 1966. After that she also won many National and State level championships, but while in touch with many administrative officers her inclination increased towards civil service and then she qualified UPSC and joined IPS.
Born in Amritsar, Kiran Bedi was good at sports as well as studies from the start. She passed her high school examination in 1963 and intermediate examination in 1965 with first division. She graduated from Government Women's College in 1965 and obtained an MA in Political Science. Moreover, she did her LL.B. from Delhi University due to her interest in studies.
Kiran Bedi cracked the UPSC examination in 1972 and became the country's first female IPS officer. She then underwent training at the National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. She was the only female candidate in the batch of 80 officers. She also faced many difficulties in her police career and won many awards. She has received the United Nations Medal, the Ramon Magsaysay Award as well as awards from the President. Kiran Bedi retired in 2007 of her own free will.
