People do not refrain from using tobacco even though they know how dangerous it is to health. World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on May 31 every year to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco on health and to reduce or stop tobacco use worldwide.
Tobacco not only adversely affects the health of those who grow and eat it but it is also quite harmful in terms of the environment as it promotes deforestation (cutting down of trees). Tobacco includes things like khaini, gutkha and supari, which are deadly. According to the WHO, the theme for World No Tobacco Day 2023 is "We need food, not tobacco." Through this theme, WHO is encouraging farmers to grow more cereals instead of tobacco. The campaign also appeals to the government to take drastic measures to ban tobacco growing.
