A social activist and office bearer of an Assam-based NGO has filed a defamation case against former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The case claims that his autobiography contains some false statements in reference to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Abhijeet Sharma has filed a case against former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Petitioner Abhijeet Sharma has filed a defamation case of Rs 1 crore against Gogoi in the Civil Judge's Court in Kamrup (metro) district and Guwahati. He has also demanded a ban on the former CJI's autobiography 'Justice for the Judge' Sharma, president of NGO Assam Public Works, has been vocal in various NRC-related issues in the state.
Abhijeet Sharma had earlier filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking to update the 1951 NRC in Assam. Also, the NRC process in Assam started in 2015 under the supervision of the High Court during the pendency of the case. In his petition, Sharma told the court that after his retirement, the former CJI had written some things regarding the removal of former NRC coordinator Pratik Hazela and his transfer to Madhya Pradesh. as well as defamatory in nature. The next hearing of the case will be held on June 3.
According to information, Ranjan Gogoi's autobiography mentions many things.
