National Desk:
The committee set up by NCP president Sharad Pawar to decide on his successor will meet on Friday. A senior NCP leader made the announcement on Thursday. The NCP leader said the meeting would be held at the party office in South Mumbai at 11 am.
The committee members include Sharad Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, his nephew Ajit Pawar, Praful Patel, Chhagan Bhujbal and other leaders. Sharad Pawar had shocked everyone by announcing on Tuesday that he was stepping down as party president but not retiring from public life.
According to party sources, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin spoke to Sule over the phone to check on developments in his party after Pawar's announcement. There is speculation in political circles as to whether the next ANICP president will be from the Pawar family, either Sule or Ajit Pawar, or whether the responsibility will be handed over to some other party leader.
Sharad Pawar, meanwhile, met party office bearers at the YB Chavan Center for the second consecutive day after announcing his resignation as party chief. Pawar will meet party workers and leaders today.
