Uniform Civil Code: Uniform rules for divorce and child adoption across all religions

National Desk:
The country has been talking about the Uniform Civil Code for a long time.  All religions should have uniform rules from divorce to adoption.  Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court.  The Supreme Court has refused to hear petitions seeking uniform laws for men and women of all religions instead of separate personal laws.  These petitions demanded uniform divorce in all religions, uniform rules on child adoption and maintenance.  The petitions also demanded uniformity of the minimum age of marriage in all religions and uniformity of the rules of inheritance and rights in ancestral property across all religions.
Hearing the petitions, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said it was the right of Parliament to make laws.  We cannot order the government to legislate on this.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that a uniform civil code is needed.  The government supports this in theory but it falls within the jurisdiction of Parliament to decide.  This cannot be done through the courts.
